Good Pub Guide Recommended
This is a lovely place to stay and the refurbished bedrooms are extremely comfortable; breakfasts are plentiful and enjoyable, too. It's all very civilised and friendly and the L-shaped bar has attractive pink and cream checked chairs around a mix of nice wooden tables, some rugs on the flagstones, green paintwork behind a modern wooden bar counter, fresh flowers, two woodburning stoves and a large stuffed trout. The airy restaurant is appealingly candlelit in the evenings. Ramsbury Bitter, Wells & Youngs Bitter and a couple of guests like Loose Cannon Abingdon Bridge and White Horse Village Idiot on handpump, 14 wines by the glass from a wide-ranging and carefully chosen list, some fine sherries and several malt whiskies. This is a peaceful and picturesque spot by the Thames and there are good quality teak chairs and tables under blue parasols in the pretty garden; it can get pretty packed on a fine day, so it's best to arrive early then. You can hire punts with champagne hampers and there are moorings for six boats - if you book in advance.
Good Pub Guide Food
Enjoyable if not cheap - food includes lunchtime sandwiches, ham hock terrine with rhubarb and red pepper salsa, yellowfin tuna tartare with ginger cucumber spaghetti, loin of wild rabbit with red lentils and coriander, slow-roast suckling pig with braised apple and black pudding, and cutlet of rose veal with sweet potato gnocchi and cherry tomato confit.
