Restaurant-with-rooms (need to book for both well in advance) in pretty 14th-c thatched building, but bar does have informal feel, bowed beam-and-plank ceiling, plenty of bric-a-brac, interesting furniture inc 'Mousey' Thompson pieces, log fire, well polished tiled kitchen range, daily papers, Black Sheep and Wold Top, 18 wines by the glass, home-made fruit liqueurs, snacks served in cocktail bar, popular coffee loft in the eaves, inventive ambitious modern cooking (not cheap); piped music; children welcome, seats on sheltered front terrace, more in garden, stylish bedrooms and suites, Pheasant Hotel nearby under same ownership as is Corner Shop opp and Pern's deli in Helmsley, open all day Sun, cl Mon lunchtime

The chef patron Andrew Pern, Michelin starred ,and his wife Jacqui who runs front of house, operate what is possibly one of the finest gastro-dining restaurant with rooms in England. Those lucky enough to have been able to book one of the eight individually styled rooms which come with chinese slate bathrooms/wetrooms, king sized beds, luxury egyptian cotton, Bang and Olufsen TVs etc, will experience their breakfast served in a specially built circular shaped building with a King Arthur-style round table seating 16. [you used to be able to book on their website and check availability, but now you have to phone up]. You can watch the chefs at work from a sitting area where they operate an honesty bar for residents. The 'pub' side of the business is very small and although you could go in for just a drink, it is really geared up to dining. The food as one would expect, is expensive, but well worth it. They have a helipad.

Probably my most favourite place to eat in the UK. I love it for its excellent food and great service. We've been half a dozen times over four years (it is over a hundred miles from our home!) and have always enjoyed a wonderful dining experience.
