Rose Cottage, Alciston, Sussex, BN26 6UW – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Old-fashioned cottage with cosy fires and country bric-a-brac, several wines by the glass, well liked food and local beers; bedrooms
This is a smashing old pub with a landlord of some character. It's extremely popular (get there early on Sunday lunchtimes especially) and many of our readers count it among their favourites. There are half a dozen tables with cushioned pews, winter log fires and quite a forest of harness, traps, a thatcher's blade and lots of other black ironware; more bric-a-brac on the shelves above the stripped pine dado or in the etched-glass windows and maybe Jasper the parrot (only at lunchtimes - he gets too noisy in the evenings). The restaurant area has a lunchtime overflow as they don't take bookings in the bar then. Dark Star Hophead, Harveys Best and a guest beer on handpump and several wines by the glass. Piped music, darts and board games. For cooler evenings, there are heaters outside and the small paddock in the garden has ducks and chickens; boules. Nearby fishing and shooting. They take self-catering bedroom bookings for a minimum of two nights. The charming small village (and local church) are certainly worth a look and there are bracing South Downs walks nearby.

Good Pub Guide Food

Popular bar food (they also have an evening restaurant menu) includes potted shrimps, farmhouse-style pâté with apple and plum chutney, local sausages with onion gravy, battered local cod, rabbit and bacon pie, lamb tagine with apricots, chickpeas and chilli, and crispy gressingham duck with orange and peppercorn sauce.

As it was my birthday my partner booked a meal at the Rose Cottage as a special treat. On arrival it was clearly busy and when taken to our table straight away i was aware of the fact the tables were very closely packed together. We were allocated a small 2 seater table and when sitting down straight away it felt very cramped and close to other diners.
At this stage i thought ok its a busy popular restaurant can see why the tables had to be closely packed together. We ordered our drinks and then the menus were handed to us. I opened it and noticed straight away in bold lettering "10% percent service charge on all meals"!!!! i have been eating out for many years and have never seen that on a menu in the UK.
We ordered our food which to be honest was below average, i had a very dry and tough steak and my partner had an overcooked red mullet. The food was placed on the table and at no point were we asked if we required any sauces nor was the pleasant phrase "enjoy your meals" spoken to us by the staff who of course are entitled to a 10% tip on every meal served!!!.
At no point whilst eating were we approached and asked if every thing was ok. Eventually after asking a very unenthusiastic waiter i was delivered a squeezy heinz bottle of ketchup and vinegar in containers straight from the supermarket( you never see this in harvesters or carveries!)
After eating the meal our plates were taken but at no point were we asked if we wanted to see the sweet menu!! We decided enough was enough and asked for the bill. When we received the bill the steak had been priced incorrectly they wanted to charge me 4 pounds more than it was priced at!!!.and not forgetting the 10% service charge!!.
i confronted the owner about the service and he rudely stated "we are busy what do you expect" Im sorry but this is not an exceptable attitude from someone running a small business in tough times
