Pot Kiln, Frilsham, Berkshire, RG18 0XX – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Country dining pub, bustling little bar, local beers, and imaginative bar and restaurant dishes; suntrap garden and nearby walks
With plenty of walks in the nearby woods and seats in a big suntrap garden looking across the valley, this particularly well run country pub is very popular in fine weather. But on colder days, too, there are lots of locals and visitors who crowd inside, keen to enjoy the good, interesting food served by warmly friendly staff. The little bar has West Berkshire Brick Kiln Bitter, Mr Chubbs Lunchtime Bitter and Maggs Magnificent Mild, and a weekly changing guest beer on handpump, wines by the glass and a couple of ciders. The main bar area has dark wooden tables and chairs on bare boards, and a winter log fire and the extended lounge is open-plan at the back and leads into a large, pretty dining room with a nice jumble of old tables and chairs, and an old-looking stone fireplace; darts and board games.

Good Pub Guide Food

Using home-made bread, some home-grown vegetables, and venison shot by the landlord, the food includes lunchtime sandwiches, venison burger and pork and leek sausages with onion marmalade with imaginative restaurant choices like ragout of muntjac with pasta and aged parmesan, wild mushroom risotto with a pheasant egg salad, pork belly with pearl barley broth and wild garlic leaves, and bass with braised gem lettuce, asparagus and saffron sauce.

Bar food times: 12 - 2.30, 6.30 - 8.30; not Tues

Reader Comments

This continues to be an excellent pub. It is situated on the edge of woodland with a sun terrace looking across the valley. Food is a great mixture of restaurant and pub, varying from ciabatta rolls with cheddar or mayo for under £4 to a full menu with the provenance for each meat and veg fully described, and even the type of venison and who shot it given.
Good choice of beers, although the 'Pot Kiln' is no longer actually brewed in the brewery behind the pub. Service is friendly and swift, and one is made very welcome.
