Good Pub Guide Recommended
Very hands-on, the landlady keeps a kindly eye on everything here, so as well as good service the little details work well, too: good coffee, for instance, and unusual bar nibbles such as warmed chorizo, as well as a good choice of wines by the glass and the well kept Bass and Greene King IPA on handpump - from a counter with comfortable leather-and-chrome bar stools. The unassuming carpeted bar on the left is small and quite brightly decorated - light and welcoming, with colourful scatter cushions on seats built into the wall and big bow window. There may be unobtrusive piped music (Peggy Lee and the like) and board games. The main lounge bar, also carpeted, has a mix of dark pub tables and some banquette seating as well as dining chairs. The good-sized garden, like the pub itself kept very neatly, has well spaced picnic-sets by a big weeping willow, with swings and a rabbit hutch; there are also tables on a small wood-screened terrace.
Good Pub Guide Food
Besides a good choice of sandwiches, starters or light dishes such as twice-baked roquefort soufflé, and familiar but carefully done things (they make their own bread, too) like home-made burgers and lasagne, the interesting food might include rewarding main courses such as a butternut squash, goats cheese and leek pie, lightly spiced plaice fillets with sagaloo and onion bhajee, or seared scallops with pork belly and black pudding.
