Olde Bulls Head, Beaumaris, Wales, LL58 8AP – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Interesting historic pub with brasserie food and well equipped bedrooms
The various areas at this relaxed inn cover quite a range of styles – there's a simple but cosy bar, a popular brasserie and a smart upstairs restaurant. It was built in 1472 and well known visitors have included Samuel Johnson and Charles Dickens, both of whom would find much of it familiar today. The low-beamed bar is nicely rambling, with plenty of interesting reminders of the town's past: a rare 17th-c brass water clock, a bloodthirsty crew of cutlasses and even an oak ducking stool tucked among the snug alcoves. There are lots of copper and china jugs, comfortable low-seated settles, leather-cushioned window seats, and a good log fire. Kindly staff serve Bass, Hancocks and a guest such as Conwy Welsh Pride on handpump. Quite a contrast, the busy brasserie behind is lively and stylishly modern, with a wine list that includes around 20 by the glass; the exceptionally good restaurant list runs to 120 bottles. The entrance to the pretty courtyard is closed by a huge simple-hinged door that's an astonishing 11 feet wide and 13 feet high. Named after characters in Dickens's novels, the bedrooms are very well equipped; some are traditional, and others more contemporary in style, and there are also bedrooms in the Townhouse, an adjacent property with disabled access.

Good Pub Guide Food

Soup and sandwiches are served in the bar. The much-enjoyed brasserie menu includes cured salmon sushi, goats cheese, mushroom and red onion filo tart, hotpot of smoked haddock, smoked trout, tomatoes, cream and parmesan, pork and chorizo meatballs with spaghetti, grilled cod with basil pesto, fish and chips, chilli bean and quorn pie with mushy peas, and grilled rib-eye steak with herb butter.

Olde Bull's head Beaumaris

Had dinner there earlier this week. The meal was very good
service also but given the plaudits given to this place
perhaps we were expecting something more?
Anyway we ate in the brassiere.

I started with a hot pot of smoked haddock and trout with
tomatoes cream and parmesan. 6.55. This was very nice - I think
the right amount was served as it was a bit rich.

I then had their fish and chips crumbed (unusual) haddock
chunky chips and mushy peas.

I wife had the steak with mushroom, tomatoes herb
butter chips 17.50.

Both mains were very good very moist fish gammon also
very good.

We had cheese for dessert a bit of a strange selection and
I think a little overpriced. We also had a lemon posset with
lavender shortbread. This was very nice.

All in all a good meal. We had a pleasant drink in the bar beforehand
which was full of locals which is good to see.

As said previously there are 2 places to eat here. You can book to eat upstairs at the restaurant 'The Loft' which had a set menu at around £40. Or you can eat downstairs in the Brasserie which has gorgeous food. You cannot book but I highly recommend that when you get there you go and put your name on the 'waiting list' and then have a drink in the bar where a member of the Brasserie staff will come and get you when your table is ready. We paid approximately £60 for food and 2 courses for 4 of us.
I would really recommend the Brasserie. We ate here twice during a week's holiday at the end of July 2009 staying near Caernarfon.
