Friendly, comfortable pub with plenty of both locals and visitors, real ales, popular food and seats outside; good bedrooms

A traditional pub with friendly, quick service and plenty of regular customers, this is well run by the hands-on landlord. The neatly carpeted low-beamed bar includes leather tub chairs and a couple of sofas in front of the inglenook log fire and they keep Black Sheep Best Bitter, Fullers London Pride and Sharps Doom Bar on handpump; daily papers, a silenced games machine in one alcove and board games. Several areas, with a gentle décor mainly in muted terracotta or pale ochre, include two back dining areas, one of which opens on to a sheltered terrace with teak furniture, and a lawn with picnic-sets beyond. The neat bedrooms are in a barn conversion.

Good Pub Guide Food

Generous helpings of well liked pubby food include baps and sandwiches, deep-fried whitebait, feta and cranberry tart, ham and eggs, vegetable lasagne, a roast of the day, sausages with onion gravy, chicken curry, rainbow trout and almonds, a mixed grill, and puddings like treacle tart and chocolate and orange cake.
