Friendly, comfortable pub with plenty of locals and visitors, real ales, popular food and seats outside; good bedrooms
Good Pub Guide Recommended
The long-serving, enthusiastic licensees work hard to retain traditional values and create a sense of cheerful enjoyment in their deservedly busy pub. The neatly carpeted low-beamed bar has leather tub chairs and a couple of chesterfield sofas in front of the inglenook log fire, daily papers, board games and Fullers London Pride, Sharps Doom Bar and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump and ten wines by the glass. The several areas, with understated décor mainly in muted terracotta or pale ochre, include two back dining sections, one of which opens on to a sheltered terrace with teak furniture, and a lawn with picnic-sets beyond. The neat bedrooms are in two barn conversions.
Good Pub Guide Food
Good, honest food includes baps and sandwiches, prawn cocktail, garlic mushrooms, vegetable or meaty lasagne, steak and kidney in ale pie, gammon and free-range eggs, tempura-battered hake and chips, mixed grill, and puddings such as treacle tart or fruit crumble.
