Gibraltar Castle, Batford, Hertfordshire, AL5 5AH – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Pleasantly traditional pub with interesting militaria displays, some emphasis on food (booking advised); pretty terrace
The quite traditional long carpeted bar at this neatly kept, welcoming pub is decked out with an impressive collection of military memorabilia – everything from rifles to swords, medals, uniforms and bullets (with plenty of captions to read) and pictures depicting various moments in Gibraltar's history. In one area the low beams give way to soaring rafters and there are comfortably cushioned wall benches, and a couple of snugly intimate window alcoves, one with a fine old clock, several board games are piled on top of the piano and a pleasant old fireplace. Fullers London Pride and ESB and a Fullers guest are on handpump; piped music. Outside, there are tables on a front terrace overlooking a nature reserve, on a large pretty decked area with lots of flowers at the back and in a tree-lined garden to one side.

Good Pub Guide Food

Bar food includes a good range of lunchtime sandwiches, ploughman's, duck and port pâté with rhubarb chutney, risotto of the day, fish and chips, steak and kidney pudding, chicken pie, and daily specials such as fried sailfish with beetroot and dill sauce, and lamb wellington stuffed with goats cheese and wrapped with parma ham with red wine jus.

Bar food times: 12 - 2.30 (6 Sun) , 6 - 9

Friendly vibe but generally the food is mutton dressed as lamb.
