Good Pub Guide Recommended
Don't be put off this enjoyable pub by its slightly unpromising position by the railway station. You can be sure of a friendly welcome, some good food and up to four real ales on handpump: Fullers London Pride, Ringwood Best and Waylands Sixpenny 6D Best and a beer brewed for them by the same brewery called Cudweiser. There's also an extensive wine list with a dozen by the glass and many remarkable bottles. The pale walls of the airy bistro bar are hung with big modern cow prints done in bright pinks, yellows and blues and there are squashy sofas with huge colourful cushions and leather seating cubes arranged at low tables on stripped-wood floors; an exposed brick chimney has an open fire. Discreet flat screen TV in one corner, piped music, board games and a good array of newspapers. In the evening you can eat very well in the sizeable dining room where there are more heavy stripped tables on bare boards and plenty of wine bottles lining the window sills. Seats outside are on an enclosed and heated terrace area.
Good Pub Guide Food
From a sensibly short menu, the good lunchtime bar food includes sandwiches, terrine of chinese spiced duck with plum chutney, haddock and chips and steak and mushroom in ale pie, with more elaborate restaurant choices like roast chicken breast, chicken and mushroom pie, smoked bacon mash and braised baby turnips, and halibut with celeriac purée, spring onion, mussels and white wine butter sauce.
