Roomy and attractive beamed pub successfully mixing a good drinking side with imaginative all-day food; rear and front garden

Décor and furnishings at this spreading pub take in a bric-a-brac-mix of wooden chairs at dark wood tables, rugs on wood (some old and some new oak) or stone floors, frame-to-frame prints on cream walls, deep red ceilings, panelling and open fires. Friendly staff extend an equally nice welcome to drinkers and diners, with both aspects of the business seeming to do well here. Alongside Greene King Speckled Hen, Phoenix Brunning & Price Original and Weetwood Cheshire Cat, three or four guests might be from brewers such as Adnams, Acorn and Copper Dragon. They also stock around 100 whiskies and a dozen wines by the glass from an extensive list; a few board games. Outside there are good solid wood tables in a pretty, well tended garden; more reports please.

As well as interesting sandwiches and ploughman's, the enjoyable daily-changing menu might include ham hock and apricot terrine, sticky chilli and sesame seed chicken with noodle salad, cauliflower, chick pea and almond tagine with apricot and date couscous, steak, mushroom and ale pie, steamed hake fillet with crushed lemon and dill potato cake, and roast duck breast with sherry leeks, caramelised apple pastry and calvados gravy.
