Good Pub Guide Recommended

Popular 16th-c inn with old-fashioned bar, airy dining rooms, real ales, good food, and seats outside; lovely bedrooms
With hands-on licensees, a genuinely warm welcome for all and highly thought-of food, it's not surprising that so many of our readers like to come back again and again to this bustling 16th-c tile-hung inn. There's a lovely old bar with beams, proper pubby tables and chairs on the old wooden floor, a fine log fire in the inglenook fireplace, Harveys Best and Old and Larkins Traditional Ale on handpump and several wines by the glass; look out for a glass cover over the 75-foot deep well. The dining rooms are light and airy with a nice mix of wooden dining chairs and tables on the pale wood-strip flooring and throughout there are hops, china platters, brass and copper ornaments and a gently upmarket atmosphere. The contemporary-style garden room has glass doors that open on to a terrace with teak furniture. This is a comfortable and enjoyable place to stay (some of the rooms overlook the church) and the breakfasts are very good. The Bluebell Railway is nearby.

Good Pub Guide Food

Cooked by one of the landlords, the enjoyable food includes lunchtime sandwiches, vietnamese rare roast beef rolls with coriander and mint salad, smoked chicken and ham hock terrine with celeriac remoulade, beer-battered fish and chips, root vegetable and parmesan cheese crumble, anchovy-marinated local lamb rump with minted crushed new potatoes, and specials like scallops with soft black pudding and pancetta, and chicken and oyster mushroom suet pudding.

Bar food times: 12 - 2 (2.30 Fri - Sun) , 6 - 9 (9.30 Fri and Sat) ; not Sun evening

We came for a small lunch party to celebrate my Mother's 80th birthday as 3x80year olds, 1x10year old boy, and 2 people somewhere in between! None of us having been here before, but wanting somewhere central to us all, we really couldn't have chosen better. The food was delicious, the beer superb, a beautiful building with friendly landlords and staff. It was a brilliant lunch for us all; the photos on the website don't do the pub justice. It was no problem to cater for us two vegetarians and I've never seen my Mum eat so much, she normally has the appetite of a bird, yet finished all her beautifully cooked sole. All our meals were excellent, and with decent real ale as well, I really recommend the cat Inn to anyone.

A first try for us too after quite a long walk with our dogs.

Agree with the previous poster - very good Sunday Roast (we had one minor critisum - the gravy was a too salty), but we thought the starters & sweets were where this pub really excelled. The cod fishcakes, with a beautifully crispy batter, being worthy of a special mention.

Our one slight disappointment was not being able to sit in the bar area (empty when we arrived) which we very much prefer as opposed to the formal dining room experience.

We are regular Sunday pub lunchers and this was the BEST roast dinner ever! We mentioned it to the waitress and the chef came out and had a chat. The staff are attentive and charming! We are now looking for more walks around West Hoathly just so that we have an excuse to go back!
