Bridge Inn, Grinton, Yorkshire, DL11 6HH – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Bustling pub with traditional, comfortable bars, log fires, several real ales and malt whiskies, and tasty bar food; neat bedrooms
This former coaching inn, in a pretty Swaledale village, is popular with walkers and their dogs – which is appropriate since there are plenty of good, surrounding walks. There are bow-window seats and a pair of stripped traditional settles among more usual pub seats, all well cushioned, a good log fire, Jennings Cumberland and Cocker Hoop and guests such as Brakspears Oxford Gold and Ringwood Best on handpump, several wines by the glass and 25 malt whiskies. On the right, a few steps take you down into a room with darts, a well lit pool table and ring the bull. On the left, past leather armchairs and a sofa by a second log fire (and a glass chess set) is an extensive two-part dining room. The décor is in mint-green and shades of brown, with a modicum of fishing memorabilia. The bedrooms are neat and simple, and breakfasts are good. There are picnic-sets outside and the inn is right opposite a lovely church known as the Cathedral of the Dales.

Good Pub Guide Food

Using local produce where possible, the well liked food includes sandwiches, black pudding with bacon, onion and mushrooms in a creamy mustard sauce on a herb croûton, leek, wild mushroom and parmesan risotto, steak in ale pie, free-range chicken filled with cheese, wrapped in bacon with a cranberry and wine sauce, moroccan lamb casserole, and salmon steak with a gruyère and parsley crust on vegetable stew. .

Another visit to The Bridge over Easter 2011. Stayed in one of their very comfortable rooms. First rate accommodation. The food was excellent as before. Unfortunately, meal service was erratic as before as well. Unlike most pubs, meals are not ordered at the bar but through the wait staff even if eating in the pub area. The wait staff seemed uninterested in taking care of orders from the pub diners. The Thursday night when I was there was not particularly busy. Yet diner after diner struggled to get the wait staff to take their orders in the bar. Even attempts to get the bar man to intervene on the diners' behalf brought shrugs from the bar man. It is a shame since the food is really first rate. I would strongly recommend the accommodation but am not sure if the excellent food is enough to overcome the experience with the poor attitude of the wait staff. I cannot understand why the managers allow this to continue.

Two visits in April found a busy pub with an enthusiastic clientele. Three hand pumps with a variety of beers. Food is excellent, but service seemed overwhelmed whether it was a slow lunch time or a busy quiz night Friday. Recommended if not in any kind of hurry.
