The staff were very friendly, the beer and food was good, and a great atmosphere in which to relax, chat and read, which is highly appropriate for Hay on Wye, well worth a visit
A genuinely characterful pub, with decent food and drink, probably at it's best in autumn/winter. Yes, the 2 parts of the pub have a different character from each other, but they're subtly different and certainly don't clash.

We come in here whenever we visit Hay and have certainly never come across surly service.

Normally piped music in pubs drives us mad, but here it's a interesting mixture of old blues, less obvious Motown and the like.

The bar with the fire in is delightful and very old world but the other part of the pub has been spoiled and has the appearence of a cafe. Food is good most of the time but sometimes what you get is very different to the description on the menu. Some surly bar staff and overpriced real ale (Timothy Taylors £3.20)
