Good Pub Guide Recommended
The charming licensees are almost always on hand to give personal attention and you can see this reflected in the general high standards and warmth at this delightful 17th-c place. Over the last year, readers have really enjoyed their kind welcome, well kept beer and delicious food (most people come to dine so booking is advised). The attractive interior (full of signs of the building's venerable age) is divided into five comfortable areas, each with its own character, from the cosy terracotta-painted bar to a light and airy gallery room with its antique wood panelling, solid oak floor and contemporary Lloyd Loom chairs. Flagstone floors, stripped or well polished antique or period-style furniture, and three good fires (one in an inglenook), add warmth and cosiness. Hobsons, Purity Pure Gold and UBU, two or three guests such as Greene King Old Speckled Hen and Purity Mad Goose are on handpump, and they've a dozen or so wines including champagne and local ones by the glass; piped music. In summer, the creeper-covered exterior is hung with lots of colourful baskets, and there are tables and chairs on a vine-covered dining terrace. This riverside village has an appealing church and pretty thatched black and white cottages.
