Enjoyably civilised pub with appealing ancient interior, good carefully sourced food, a great range of drinks and a pretty garden with table service
Good Pub Guide Recommended
As always, this particularly well run pub is a winner with our readers and every aspect of the place is first class. The attractive interior with plenty of signs of the building's venerable age - is divided into five comfortable areas, each with its own character, from the cosy terracotta-painted bar to a light and airy gallery room with antique wood panelling, solid oak floor and contemporary Lloyd Loom chairs. Flagstone floors, stripped or well polished antique or period-style furniture and three good fires (one in an inglenook) add warmth and cosiness. Hobsons Best, Purity Pure Gold and UBU and a guest beer on handpump and 18 wines (including prosecco and champagne) by the glass. In summer, the virginia creeper-covered exterior is festooned with colourful hanging baskets. The lovely garden has solid teak furniture, a vine-covered terrace, water features and gentle lighting. This riverside village has a handsome church and pretty thatched black and white cottages and is certainly worth exploring.
