Good Pub Guide Recommended

Ancient place with fascinating antiques in rambling rooms, and good choice of drinks and food Often used for filming programmes such as Midsomer Murders, this fine old place has been trading for nearly 900 years; they have an interesting leaflet documenting the pub's history. It's a favourite with many of our readers who come back on a regular basis and you can always be sure of a friendly welcome. The rambling rooms have huge black ship's timbers, lovely worn floors, finely carved old oak panelling, roaring winter fires with handsomely decorated iron firebacks and cluttered mantelpieces, and there's a massive settle apparently built to fit the curved transom of an Elizabethan ship. Nooks and crannies are filled with a fascinating collection of antiques, including rifles, powder-flasks and bugles, ancient pewter and pottery tankards, lots of tarnished brass and copper, needlework samplers and richly coloured stained glass. Brakspears, Chiltern Ale and Beechwood Bitter, Rebellion IPA and Mild and Theakstons Old Peculier on handpump, a carefully annotated list of bottled beers and malt whiskies, farm ciders, perry, somerset brandy and around a dozen wines by the glass; board games. You can sit outside in a neatly hedged front rose garden or under the shade of a tree.

Good Pub Guide Food

Traditional, popular bar food includes lunchtime sandwiches, devilled lamb kidneys on fried toast, chicken caesar salad, vegetable risotto, fish pie, steak and kidney pudding, seasonal game dishes, and pork belly with bubble and squeak with apple sauce. They still ask to keep your card behind the bar.

Bar food times: 12 - 10

Popped in here last week for two bacon baguettes and chips which were excellent as usual. I don't know how they cook their bacon but it is very tasty! The good news is they have planning permission to build the rooms for the pub no idea when they will be ready no sign of activity yet!

We never tire of this place and its bacon baguette with chips included is excellent value. Interesting then that
A plate of chips is 3.75 - not so good value. They one at 11.30am and start serving food then in case your walk
Takes you there early! Sadly no sign of rooms they have been talking about building for some time now. Lovely place!

The building alone is worth a visit, not a right angle in the place and stuffed with interesting artefacts. Once you get used to the surroundings, the ale and food are excellent and the staff confident and friendly. This building is mediaeval and conveys a continuity of history worthy of its name.

Had my lunch there yesterday when doing a eight mile walk around this area.

I had a BLT which came with fantastic bacon and a nice pile of chips. No sign of their lodgings yet which is a shame as I fancy a overnight stopover for a special night out.

Had an excellent lunch here yesterday. I had my predictable BLT which came with chips. Staff very helpful and the food was excellent. They use good ingredients and the food is excellent value. Read the whisky leaflet on your table and be an expert on the golden stuff and see even Japan now makes the stuff!

Visited 16th December 2009 on a cold winters day. Friendly and very obliging staff. An amazing range of excellent ales and other drinks on offer. Great menu with lots of choice of mainly classic English food (various pies, steak pudding, venison etc) plus some sandwiches. Pub has various areas for dining some with inviting open fires. A bit special !

We just had lunch there. It is on a walk we do from nearby Penn. We think their baguettes at five pounds including a side or of chips is excellent value given the prices that dominate in this area. You ought to book at weekends and holiday days. The staff are friendly and helpful. I had the BLT bacon which comes with a nice portion of chips and our favourite tomato sauce. Can't wait till they have rooms. You might want to check the opening/food times I thnk they start earlier than you say.

I've just spent the last few hours enjoying a lovely long lunch at The Royal Standard, great food, very friendly atmosphere, and really homely log fires. Well worth a visit.

I have just sent a long negative comment about The Royal Standard of England to the Editors. I tried to give it a star rating - which would have been NIL, but I somehow managed to give it 3.5 and I can't correct it or do another rating. I don't know if you can correct this for me and I really don't want to give the pub any stars at all - or a half at the most if you can't give it nil. It was one of the most unpleasant luncheon experiences I have ever had.
