Good Pub Guide Recommended
The friendly Stevens family have now run this 18th-c former farmhouse for over a decade, and this year they've added more comfortable bedrooms, which our readers enjoy very much. There's a small bar area with a mix of seating, a finely worked plaster ceiling with the Wyvill family's coat of arms and an elaborate stone fireplace with a warm winter fire. The second bar has a lower ceiling with fans, leather seating, old oak tables, various alcoves and a model train on a railway track running around the room; the reception area includes a huge leather sofa which can seat up to eight people, another carved stone fireplace and an old leaded church stained-glass window partition. Both rooms are hung with pictures of local scenes. John Smiths and Theakstons Best on handpump, a dozen wines by the glass and some rare malt whiskies; board games. There are several large wooden benches under large white parasols for outdoor dining and picnic-sets by the well. Constable Burton Gardens are opposite and worth a visit.
Good Pub Guide Food
Using home-grown herbs and vegetables and game from the estate across the road, the highly thought of food includes lunchtime sandwiches, ham, pork, chicken and cheese terrine with pear and apple chutney, wild mushroom risotto, parmesan pork with a tomato and herb sauce, breaded chicken supreme stuffed with mozzarella and smoked bacon on creamed leeks with stilton sauce, sea bream with potted prawns and shrimps with a lemon butter sauce, and venison on roast vegetable purée with a cranberry and cassis jus.
