Wykeham Arms, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 9PE – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Tucked-away pub with lots to look at, several real ales and lots of wines by the glass; no children inside
The series of bustling rooms in this tucked-away old pub have all sorts of interesting collections dotted about and three log fires. Also,19th-c oak desks retired from nearby Winchester College, a redundant pew from the same source, kitchen chairs and candlelit deal tables and big windows with swagged curtains. A snug room at the back, known as the Jameson Room (after the late landlord Graeme Jameson), is decorated with a set of Ronald Searle 'Winespeak' prints and a second one is panelled. Fullers London Pride, Seafarers and Gales HSB and a couple of guest beers like Flowerpots Goodens Gold and Perridge Pale on handpump, lots of wines by the glass and several malt whiskies. There are tables on a covered back terrace with more on a small courtyard.

Good Pub Guide Food

Good, if not cheap, the food includes sandwiches, corn-fed chicken and foie gras terrine with spiced pear purée, crab cake with a caper, tomato, red onion and lemon salsa, mushroom risotto with a poached egg and parmesan, roast lamb rump with sweetbreads and trompette mushrooms, and pork tenderloin with black pudding hash and grain mustard jus.

Really nice, if a little cluttered set up, calm, traditional interior and lovely food. Maybe a little bit overpriced but we really enjoyed our visit!

A Winchester institution. Beer is well kept, and the service exceptionally good. Fullers have begun to update the decor, which is a shame, and the wine list is not what it once was. Despite these flaws it remains well worth a visit, and no trip to my home town is complete without at least a pint here.

Great pub. Good beer and excellent wine list. Food not only good but great value, especially for the centre of Winchester. Friendly service and the pub has lots of character. We will be back!
