One of the city' s best pub gardens with high ivy-sheltered walls, summer bar, winter heaters and lots of seats on flagstones; plenty of inside character in three tiny unspoilt rooms (fun trying to navigate the minuscule doors between them), a wealth of dark oak furnishings, high backed sturdy built-in elm benches, time-smoked ceilings and coal-effect fire, cosy pre-war-style dining room, fair-priced enjoyable food (all day Fri-Sun), Fullers, Timothy Taylors and three guests, summer Pimms and winter mulled wine, friendly staff; children (till 7pm) and dogs welcome, open all day
