Blue-painted and refurbished village pub using reclaimed farm materials, four real ales, friendly staff and good, popular food
Good Pub Guide Recommended
Saved from closure by a local farmer, this is a family run, 18th-c village pub with a warmly friendly atmosphere. Many elements from the farm have gone into the careful renovations: the bricks in the bay window, the boards in the ceiling, some of the beams and the huge piece of sycamore that acts as the counter in the snug bar. The main bar has built-in wall seats with scatter cushions, windsor and farmhouse chairs and stools around all sorts of tables on wooden flooring, a woodburning stove in a brick fireplace (with big logs piled into another) and horse-related items on pale paintwork; background music, TV, darts and board games. The dining area is similarly furnished. Stools line the blue-painted counter where they keep Abbeydale Absolution, Adnams Southwold, Oakham JHB and Star Winter Ale on handpump, a dozen wines by the glass and ten malt whiskies; the resident springer spaniel is called Audrey. There are seats and tables on a side terrace.
