Good Pub Guide Recommended
This lovely place has four linked rooms, the one on the left is snuggest in winter with its blazing woodburning stove in a monumental fireplace putting real warmth into the ancient flagstones. There's plenty to look at in the various low-beamed rooms, from antique prints through an interesting series of vintage motor-racing posters to the contemporary Laurie Williamson prints over on the right - and some intriguing wallpaper (enlargement of a 19th-c sporting print here, leather-bound books there). The furniture too gives the feeling that it's all been carefully chosen and thought through, with some fine antique oak settles as well as chunky stripped-pine tables. They have a good choice of wines by the glass, an ale Moorhouses brew for them (The Waddy), and other well kept ales on handpump such as Goose Eye and Grays Best; the helpful and welcoming landlord ensures a friendly easy-going atmosphere. Wicker chairs on a sunny flagstoned front terrace look across to this attractive village's church (it's just on the edge of the Forest of Bowland, too), and there are more tables on a two-level back terrace, with picnic-sets on a neat tree-sheltered lawn.
