Turtley Corn Mill, Avonwick, Devon, TQ10 9ES – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Careful conversion of tall mill house with interestingly furnished areas, local beers, modern bar food, and huge garden; bedrooms
Surrounding this carefully converted mill house is an extensive garden with interesting ducks on a small lake, plenty of well spaced picnic-sets and a giant chess set; it's all rather delightful on a sunny day. Inside, there's a spreading series of linked areas with big windows looking over the grounds, a pleasant array of prints, a history of the mill and framed 78rpm discs on pastel-painted walls, elderly wireless sets and house plants dotted about and a mix of comfortable dining chairs around heavy baluster-leg tables. Also, bookcases, fat church candles and oriental rugs in one area, dark flagstones by the bar, a strategic woodburning stove dividing one part, a side enclave with a modern pew built in around a really big table, and so on. Dartmoor Legend, St Austell Tribute, Sharps Doom Bar and Summerskills Tamar on handpump, several wines by the glass and around 30 malt whiskies. They will keep your credit card if you eat outside. This is under the same ownership as the Finnygook at Crafthole (in Cornwall).

Reader Comments

The pub does have changing facilities for babies and has had them for years. There is indeed no children's menu but a number of dishes can be half sized and there is always a light bite menu. The gardens are perfect for children. Just can't understand the comments here - I think it best that he does go to McDonalds - better suited.

Good points and bad points about this place.

Great outside area, food is pretty good -I can understand the other comment about complacent staff, and agree.

It is a little confusing as they are perfectly situated to be encouraging families yet they obviously don't want them there that much.

They don't have a changing facility (at least when I last went and needed it...For my son!) and I was initially told I could change them on the floor in the Ladies? They did in the end let me use a staff area.

Undecided in all.

Evening Food is great, breakfast was amazing.
Room was lovely and fresh and modern
Location beautiful. Staff ana atmosphere welcoming and friendly.
Fabulous price for the quality received.
I would highly recommend this pub after our stay this May bank holiday weekend.
