Peaceful pub with friendly staff, traditional furnishings, well liked food, several real ales and open fires; good walking country

Tucked away down leafy lanes, this 17th-c inn is cosily traditional with a happy mix of wooden tables and chairs and built-in cushioned wall seats on wooden floorboards and woodburning stoves at each end of the bar. There's an array of books, board games, candles in bottles, brewery memorabilia and paintings, lots of hops and some faded rugs on the stone floor towards the back of the pub. Fullers London Pride, Harveys Best and Old Dairy Brewery, Shepherd Neame Master Brew and a guest on handpump, lots of malt whiskies, several wines by the glass, local Biddenden cider and local fruit juice. On warmer days you can sit out on the front terrace and there are plenty of nearby walks along the Wye Downs or North Downs Way.

Enjoyable bar food from a daily changing menu, using seasonal local produce, might include items such as sandwiches, caramelised goats cheese with grilled sweet and sour strawberries, steamed asparagus topped with poached egg and lemon hollandaise, red onion, mushroom and gorgonzola tart, dover sole with caper butter, chicken, ham and leek pie, tuna steak nicoise, rack of lamb on courgette provençale with sweet potato dauphinoise, and honey and mustard sausages.
