Good Pub Guide Recommended
Unpretentious own-brew pub scoring well for food as well as beer from its unique four-storey Victorian brewhouse
This is pleasantly airy place to sit and enjoy a meal sample one of the four excellent beers that are brewed in the Victorian John Roberts brewhouse (which is a separate business) across the yard. These are served from old-fashioned handpumps; also several wines by the glass, carry-out kegs and the brewery sells beer by the barrel. The recently modernised dining has a smart oak and glass dining room, but the front bar remains as characterfully ungimmicky as it's always been. It's genuinely part of the local community - you might chance upon the film club, live jazz, morris dancers, a brass band playing in the garden or the local rugby club enjoying a drink, and in July they hold a popular annual beer festival. There are newspapers to read, and a good range of board games.Good Pub Guide Food
Tasty, and in generous portions, bar food includes soup and sandwiches, starters such as spiced cajun chicken salad, breaded calamari and organic smoked salmon pâté, and main courses like the popular braised beef and wild mushrooms in beer with potato cake, rumpsteak burger with bacon, oriental stir-fry, and chargrilled tuna and king prawn kebabs; puddings such as chocolate brownie and strawberry kebab, and hot pear and chocolate pudding.
