Good Pub Guide Recommended

Handsome old inn with smart bar rooms, enjoyable food, local ales and friendly owners; comfortable bedrooms
The licensees of this 400-year-old honey-coloured stone inn work very hard to create an atmosphere where all customers feel comfortable – drinkers, diners, walkers (with their dogs) and families. The long, rather narrow main room is smartly traditional: beams, local pictures, built-in cushioned window seats, solid chairs around a nice mix of old tables and a woodburning stove at one end with a big open fire at the other. There's also a pretty stripped-stone dining room; best to book to be sure of a table, especially at weekends. Butcombe Bitter, Cheddar Ales Potholer and a guest like Moor Revival on handpump, a dozen wines by the glass and several malt whiskies. The pub is on a quiet village lane by the church, which has a striking tower. This is a nice place to stay and the bedrooms are delightful.

Good Pub Guide Food

Using seasonal local produce, the enjoyable food includes sandwiches, smoked mackerel pâté, tagliatelle with parmesan, wild mushrooms and wilted wild garlic, beer-battered fish, honey-roasted pork chop with cider sauce, and bass fillets with creamed leeks and fennel potatoes.

Really nice old pub with lots of character, very friendly staff, and very wholesome food. Only complaint is that the menu lacked much variety or origniality - fish and chips, sausage and mash, ham egg and chips - although they were very nicely cooked - lovely brown chips. The pub is next door to the very beautiful church, and the village has an unspoilt, hidden away feel.

We visited this pub for an evening meal, 17 February 2009. The food was exceptional, particularly enjoyed the Goats Cheese starter and the Lamb main course.
Lovely log fire burning, friendly licensee, a wonderful experience for the 5 in our party.
