Good Pub Guide Recommended
Even on a wet and windy winter's day, this bustling 17th-c country pub will be full of chatty customers - all warmly welcomed by the friendly landlady and her helpful staff. The two little traditional communicating rooms have high-backed antique settles, pews and schoolroom chairs, olde-worlde prints and blacksmith's tools on the walls, and bare boards and scrubbed deal tables on the left; three big fireplaces with log fires make it especially snug in winter. An arch leads to a brick-floored room with another open fire. There's a fine choice of seven real ales on handpump: Andwell Resolute Bitter, Bowman Wallops Wood, Fullers London Pride, Hogs Back TEA, Otter Amber, Sharps Doom Bar and Stonehenge Pigswill. There are seats out in front and in the back garden; pleasant nearby walks.
Good Pub Guide Food
Generous helpings of carefully cooked, good food might include sandwiches, filo prawns with a sweet chilli or garlic mayonnaise dip, chicken curry, avocado and stilton bake, game or steak and mushroom in ale pies, gammon and egg, calves liver and bacon with onion gravy, and chicken in honey and wholegrain mustard sauce.
