Good Pub Guide Recommended
Always friendly and with a cheerful, bustling atmosphere, this is an enjoyable little 17th-c pub in a charming village. It's popular locally but has plenty of visitors, too, and the small snug lounge on the right has comfortable seats and decent tables, sizeable antique prints, tankards hanging from the beam over the serving bar, a partly boarded ceiling, and a good winter log fire in a big stone fireplace. Down a couple of steps, the public bar on the left has an open fire and this leads into a dining room with yet another open fire. Wells & Youngs Bitter and Special and a guest such as St Austell Tribute on handpump, up to 14 wines by the glass and 19 malt whiskies; piped music and skittle alley. One sunny terrace has a boules pitch and across the road there's another little walled, raised terrace with a waterwheel and a stream; plenty of tables and seats. There are nice walks through the valley. The famous Roman villa is nearby.
Good Pub Guide Food
They bake their own bread and make their own pasta for the well presented food which might include lunchtime filled baguettes, scallops on beetroot and potato cakes with a champagne dressing, a burger with home-made relish and onion jam, garlic-roasted mediterranean vegetables with pesto and linguine, black pudding-stuffed pork loin with chorizo and an apple and cider jus, and gresham duck breast with a soy and teriyaki reduction.
