We have been popping into the Rose & Portcullis, Butleigh for a drink since Simon took it over towards the end of 2011. As evening meals are now being served we decided to give it a try and it did not disappoint. Lovely food served by the fire, polite staff and a good price. We genuinely can recommend the Rose & Port for excellent food and will be telling as many people as we can.

Good news! The Rose & Portcullis is under new management and there are promising signs of great improvements on the way. The new landlord makes a career of turning around 'failing' pubs and has several notable successes under his belt. Within a few weeks, he has gutted the kitchen and promises a brand new menu for the New Year. Gone are the dingy carpets to reveal the original flagstone floors. 3 woodburners/open fires have been installed, which seriously ramp up the welcoming factor. The twee thatched bar has been ripped out and new real ales are coming onstream. I look forward to seeing the renovations completed, but the feel of the place has already improved hugely.

The Rose & Port (as known to locals) is an old-fashioned local pub. A conservatory extension provides a large dining area; most popular for its reasonably priced Sunday carvery. The bar areas do look a little dingy and tired and would benefit from a revamp. The pub has traditionally supported local sporting teams, and there are a few too many dusty trophies and faded team photos dotted around. However, the welcome is warm and there are several nice beers and ciders on tap.
