We visited last night for a family meal and one of our party is a vegetarian. As with most establishments the Veggie menu was limited to Rissoto or mushroom pasta or a tart involving goats cheese. Unfortunately my wife doesn't enjoy either of these so we asked the waitress for a simple omlette and chips as there were plenty of eggs on the menu of one description or another. She told us she would have to check with chef! Anyway, back she came with the bad news, chef couldn't do an omlette. Amazed by this, especially in an establishment that proudly displays it was once a Best Pub Award winner i spoke to the manager thinking the poor girl has been intimidated by the nasty chef. Even more amazing, i was told by him that they couldn't do it because they didn't have enough eggs! Needless to say i didn't spend the £100 i was going to spend and settled the drinks bill instead. Then i got charged twice to be informed that it wouldn't show on my bank statement because the machine lost its connection! I couldn't get it sorted there and then but have faithfully been informed that if it does show on my statement i will get a refund, lets hope so!

We thought we were going out to an English pub to have an English pub meal – how wrong could we have been!
This was no ordinary pub meal, this was a gastronomic experience of the highest quality and one of the best nights I have experienced for as long as I can remember. I have never seen food prepared like this outside the television so it was a great surprise to have this in a warm, friendly Devon pub.
From the minute we walked into the Rose & Crown to the minute we left we were treated as though we were special and nothing was too much trouble for the helpful, polite & courteous staff.
The food was beautifully presented, on time and generous. We even received a complimentary starter which was out of this world but meant I had no room for dessert.
A word of warning to those who read these reviews and believe the more negative ones - Do not go to the Rose & Crown if you want a plate of food piled high and straight out of the microwave, tasteless and lacking in presentation. Also avoid it like the plague if you want alcopops, juke box music and games machines! There are other establishments that will cater for your needs!
I have only been to Devon before to watch rugby or be forced marched over the moors. I will not need to be forced to march back into the Rose and Crown.
Thank you for helping make a great weekend, a fantastic one.

I had a fantastic time there on my visit to the area. This is the probably the first time in ages I've really enjoyed a pub meal, what great food. Great to find a full a la cart menu available (the difference between this and the usual rubbish that pubs churn out is to be applauded).
Comfortably furnished, friendly staff, fantastic coffee and lovely log fire.
This pub is a fabulous find I will definitely be back on my next visit to Devon

Seems to be getting better and better. Beautiful food presentation and cooking, great service, really well kept establishment.

I particularly enjoy sitting by the open log fire with a glass of wine with my friends. The lunch time and early supper menu is excellent value.

Consistantly good. Highly recommend.

A really excellent pub and restaurant. The service is fantastic, really professional but laid back enough to be friendly. The food is without question the best I had on my holiday; we went to all the recommended restaurants in the area over our week in Devon. I know a few people who live in the area and they always speak very proudly of the Rose & Crown. (Book in advance - it was heaving on a Wednesday night in January!!)

After hearing rave reviews about the 'NEW' Rose and Crown, my family and myself decided to take a trip one thursday evening in September to celebrate a birthday.
After arriving without booking, (We later discovered that it is best to book in advance to avoid disappointment) we were informed by very welcoming, smartly dressed, and hospitable staff that they would be able to squeeze us in but that there might be a slight wait (through no fault of their own).
After having an enjoyable drink on the comfortable sofas, 30 minutes later we were shown to our table where we ended up having one of the best nights out that we have had in a long while due to, exquisite food, excellent service, and a relaxing atmosphere.
I most definately will be going back in December when i revisit Devon, and have since heard back from friends and family that i have recommended it to that they have also had the same pleasant experience, all i can say to the new management is Bravo!

Five of us had a truly dreadful evening at this pub in August this year. The service was without doubt the worst we have ever experienced - a two course meal took, from the time we were given our table to the time the main courses finally arrived, a quite extraordinary two hours. Two out of four starters were cold, and no apology was forthcoming for that. Five main courses were average in quality and over priced. Management was non existent, and staff were reluctant to take any action to make some amends for the poor service let alone the standard of the food. This place on the basis of that one evening (a Wednesday) does not deserve a single star.

The new owners are excellent. Service is great. Don't listen to the other reviews it has a modern look that everybody under 60 will appreciate. There is an excellent range of beers larger and wines. The place is special. It feels clean homely and welcoming. The food is great... A resturant posh menu to a jacket potato or a sandwich for lunch. Don't forget order bar snacks or try the olives. They have also now got a function room which can be booked for parties.... To round up the new landlord is excellent and the pub is a real asset to the villiage. If you haven't tried it since the new owners have taken it on then it's worth another visit. Just don't tell everyone about it as j won't be able to get a table....

Not really a pub as we know them. My visit was at 10pm on a Fri evening and there were only about half a dozen other punters at this time. By 10.30 we were the only ones left. Poor bar service typified by us having to stop a member of the six strong staff (loudly cleaning cutlery) to get us another (too cold) pint of London Pride. Staff seemed surprised to be asked.

"Devon Pub of the Year 2009" - Really?

Inhospitable welcome, arrived 40 mins before reservation time, waited 20 mins after reservation time to be seated and only by buttonholing waitress did we receive menus and wine list. 1st course served 1:15 after arrival. Soiled carpets, slate table mats stuck to sticky table top that had been inadequately cleaned and had it's varnish flaking off. Beer tainted almost like uncleaned pipes. Restaurant in serious need of a Maitre D. Food very average but main course portions small, both food and wine overpriced, pretenious! Glad to get out.
