Worth a Visit

Refurbished 17th-c beamed pub under newish management, well kept ales such as Black Sheep, Sharps and Woodfordes, plenty of wines by the glass and good fairly traditional food including daily specials, friendly helpful service; no dogs inside, tables in raised garden with boules

We used to go to the Rose & Crown a lot a few years ago, when there was a good chef, but the pub went through a poor patch after that. Now it has been nicely refurbished under a new manager and everything is very clean. Plenty of staff, all friendly and helpful. Good range of beers including the popular Wherry and Yorkshire's Blacksheep.
The food is now excellent and can be enjoyed outside in the raised garden on a warm evening. Very attentive waitresses, even though they have quite a walk from the kitchen! The garden is a little smaller than it used to be, but has been tidied up and there is a small pétanque area. Well-behaved dogs are allowed in the garden, but not inside the pub.
The Rose & Crown is now very popular with the locals: it was very full when we ate there a few evenings ago, and the car park was full - though one can usually find parking space nearby in Ashdon village.

The pub has been nicely refurbished. I took my family there at 6 pm for supper and was told my children (aged 4 and 6 ) HAD to be seated at all times to comply with their licence which does not make it very family friendly (we played hide and seek in the cold garden!) The beer and wine was good and food was reasonable but the hand cut chips were potato wedges with skins. Overall quite good but not family friendly.
