Red Lion, Crick, Northamptonshire, NN6 7TX – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Nicely worn-in friendly coaching inn off M1 with straightforward lunchtime food and pricier more detailed evening menu
One reader tells us that the landlord at this old stone thatched pub ‘is just the type of jovial chap you want to see behind a bar'. He goes on to say that ‘the beer is well kept, the prices are reasonable and the food is tasty but not pretentious'. We couldn't have put it better ourselves. Popular with locals, the traditional low-ceilinged bar has lots of comfortable seating, some rare old horsebrasses, pictures of the pub in the days before it was surrounded by industrial estates and a tiny log stove in a big inglenook. Four well kept beers on handpump include Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Greene King Old Speckled Hen, Wells & Youngs Bombardier and a guest. There are a few picnic-sets under parasols on a terrace by the car park, and in summer you can eat out in the old coachyard which is sheltered by a perspex roof and decorated with lots of pretty hanging baskets.

Good Pub Guide Food

Generous helpings of bar food (they don't do starters) includes sandwiches and ploughman's, chicken and mushroom or steak pie, tuna pasta bake, breaded plaice, and vegetable pancake rolls. Prices go up a little in the evening when they offer a wider range of dishes that might include stuffed salmon fillet, lamb shank, half a roast duck, and sirloin steak; bargain-price Sunday roast.

Justifiably a recommended pub. The landlord is just the type of jovial chap you want to see behind a bar, the beer is well-kept, the prices are reasonable and the food is tasty but not pretentious. There's also plenty of vegetarian options. I had an excellent fish pie at £8.95 and a slice of key lime pie to top it off. Busy while food being served (till about 9pm) but then comfortable and chatty.

This is a pub I have been going to at lunchtimes at the weekend every now and then for the past two and a half years.
It opens at 12 noon and quickly becomes busy. The food is all home-cooked and very good value if a little predicable. The service is good and the staff are friendly. It feels quite cosy with a roaring fire in winter. All in all good value for money.

I visited this pub one lunchtime with my wife, and we couldn't believe how busy it was. The main bar was rather dark due to the small windows, but the wall lights were on. The pub was not full of the "old fashioned" sort of locals playing dominoes, rather the clientele consisted mainly old age pensioners have meals. All main courses were £4.95, with a wide, if not inspirational, choice. Sandwiches were cheaper. The Old Speckeled Hen was excellent and sensibly priced, and the young bar staff pleasant and helpful. Good value for money, but not a pub for gourmets.
