Good Pub Guide Recommended
The perfect pub' says one reader with huge enthusiasm and indeed, it's a pretty inn with wonderful food, a proper bar, first class service and stylish bedrooms. What more could you want? The beamed and bow-windowed bar has copper pans hanging above a woodburning stove in the sizeable fireplace, cushioned window seats and high-backed wooden dining chairs around a mix of tables (each set with a church candle) and some old prints. There's Black Sheep, Two Chefs (named for them from Great Yorkshire) and a couple of guest beers on handpump, 15 wines by the glass, 40 malt whiskies and a farm cider. Service is prompt and friendly. Beyond, all is airy and comfortably contemporary, angling around some chunky button-back leather chesterfields and armchairs (where there's another woodburner) into a light restaurant area overlooking the park, with similar tables and chairs on bare boards; background music. There are tables on the garden's peaceful lawn and picnic-sets on the front terrace; the yew tree is said to be 500 years old. As well as two stylish rooms with their own little terrace and views over Dalton Park, there are now three luxury suites. The village is charming and its elegant Victorian church spire, 62 metres tall, is visible for miles around.
