Good Pub Guide Recommended
A long line of linked rooms are divided by a central stone hearth with a great round stove - and by the servery itself, with Brakspears and Hook Norton Old Hooky on handpump, an interesting range of wines in two glass sizes, and a good choice of soft drinks. The chef/landlord and his charming young staff ensure a genial atmosphere, helped by the tables' fat church candles and flower bunches. Past the bar area with its cushioned wall pews, creaky beamed ceiling and age-darkened flooring tiles, dining tables on parquet have neat red chairs, and beyond that leather sofas cluster round an end log fire; there is stripped stone throughout. A sheltered back terrace has teak tables under giant parasols with heaters, and beyond are picnic-sets on pale gravel.
Good Pub Guide Food
Hearty well prepared food using good local ingredients, especially from Kelmscott, includes lunchtime sandwiches, wild garlic and goats cheese tart, salmon and prawn fishcakes, ham and eggs, a risotto of the day, venison burgers with triple-cooked chips, barbary duck leg confit with sweet chilli sauce, and well aged steaks; good cheeses, too.
