Good Pub Guide Recommended
The setting of this 18th-c inn is delightful as it's at the bottom of Flowerdale Glen, tucked comfortably away from the modern waterside road. One of the main draws are their own-brewed beers like Blind Piper, Erradale, Flowerdale and Slattadale - in addition to ales from An Teallach, Cairngorm and Orkney (and Atlas) breweries. Quite a few fairly priced wines by the glass and around 20 malt whiskies, too. The relaxed public bar is popular with chatty locals and is quite traditional, with paintings and murals on exposed stone walls and stools lined up along the counter; board games, TV, fruit machine and juke box. There are picnic-sets prettily placed by the trees lining the stream that flows past under the old stone bridge. Credit (but not debit) cards incur a surcharge of £1.75.
Good Pub Guide Food
They have their own smokery and bake their own bread, and as well as fresh local fish (scallops, mussels, haddock, crab and lobster) and game (pheasant and venison), the tasty food includes sandwiches, cullen skink, lamb, steak or wild mushroom burgers, pizzas, vegetable tajine, and specials like smoked mackerel pâté and chicken breast on warm potato and black pudding salad with a cheese and whisky sauce.
