An environmentally responsible approach to local food sourcing, including from the pub’s own farm 2 miles away and Bishopswood Shoot, lies behind a regularly changing menu of simple, well-prepared food.
The menu carefully combines traditional pub classics such as Game Pie with Seasonal Vegetables; Venison Burger with Red Cabbage Pickle and Chips; and Beer Battered Pollack and Chips with Brasserie style dishes such as Spiced Fig Tart with Goat’s Cheese and Seared Duck Breast with Shallot Tatin.
Amongst others, awards include Flavours of Herefordshire Gastro Pub of the Year 2009. Supplier nights such as Chase Vodka Night and Wye Valley Ale Night promote the wonderful local produce and give customers the opportunity to meet the suppliers.
There are lovely walks including the Woodland Walk and the river is nearby. During the summer months the sun terrace offers outdoor dining and views towards Goodrich Castle.

Good Pub Guide Recommended
Consistently well run, this is an airy, stylish dining pub with welcoming staff and a relaxed atmosphere. The décor is fresh and contemporary, there's a row of strikingly tall arched windows and comfortable leather armchairs and sofas on flagstones - as well as smaller chairs around broad pedestal tables. The granite-topped modern bar counter has Wye Valley Bitter and Butty Bach on handpump, four local ciders, fairly priced wines by the glass and several malt whiskies; opposite are a couple of tall, nicely clean-cut tables with matching chairs. The walls are mainly cream or dark pink, with photographs of the local countryside, and there' s a good unobtrusive lighting. One wall stripped back to the stonework has a woodburning stove, also open to the comfortable and compact dining area on the other side; piped music. There are tables out on the terrace with views towards Goodrich Castle, a newly redesigned garden with plenty of dining space, and an external kitchen. They offer leaflets detailing pleasant nearby walks of an hour or so.
Good Pub Guide Food
The pub owns a 1,000-acre farm and woodland close by which supply them with game, rabbits, poultry, beef, fruit and vegetables: sandwiches, moules marininère, home-smoked mackerel with smoked ham and rocket cakes and dill crème fraîche, home-made burger with bacon and cheese, thai green chicken curry, a pie of the day, fresh tagliatelle with wild mushrooms, and venison haunch with red wine sauce and cassis jelly.
