Good Pub Guide Recommended

Bustling and friendly dining pub with imaginative food, several real ales and quite a few wines by the glass; sizeable garden
Readers very much enjoy this well run, friendly pub and you will be sure to get a genuinely warm welcome from the hardworking, hands-on licensees. Several small linked green-carpeted areas have a cheerful, bustling atmosphere, comfortably cushioned pews and farmhouse chairs, a sofa beside the woodburning stove, candles in bottles, horsey and hunting prints and local wildlife pictures. Two dining areas have a brighter feel with quarry tiles and lightly timbered white walls. Cotleigh Golden Seahawk, Exmoor Ale and Otter Head on handpump, 14 wines by the glass, two local ciders, 25 malt whiskies and a good range of spirits; skittle alley, chess and solitaire. There are plenty of tables and chairs in the sizeable garden and on the terrace, and they have a wendy house and other play equipment for children; there are good surrounding walks.

Good Pub Guide Food

Growing some of their own vegetables, keeping their own hens and using seasonal local produce from named suppliers, the imaginative bar food might include lunchtime filled baguettes, pork and pistachio terrine with home-made fruit chutney, mussels in a cider cream sauce, beer-battered cod and chips, organic pork and apple sausages, black bream fillets on wild mushrooms, leeks and bacon, and confit duck leg on onion marmalade.

Visited lunch time on 6th July 2010. This was at least our fourth visit spread over 5 years as this is our lunch stop off the M5 on the way to Dartmouth and beyond. For me, this pub is as good as it gets. The welcome by the owner (who always seems to know me even though it can be 2 years since I last saw him), the choice and quality of the food, the very prompt service and the well kept beer. If only there were many more pubs like this (though the number is certainly increasing).

Visited on Wednesday lunchtime during September 2009 when pub was very busy mainly with locals having lunch. Very friendly welcome from landlord. Good, well kept Cotleigh ale. Excellent home cooked ham baguette with very generous portion of meat. Nice scallops with salad. Impressive service as food was served within 10 minutes of ordering.

My husband and I went here recently for our anniversary. Lovely pub garden which we sat in to have our meal in the sunshine. The starters and desserts were beautiful, although main course was average. My main course was slightly bland and my husbands was a very small portion for the price of it. Good choice of food though in a nice location.

Friendly Land Lord. Good food incomfortable surroundings, plus good beer. Everything I want of a pub
