Masons Arms, Cartmel Fell, Cumbria, LA11 6NW – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Stunning views, beamed bar with plenty of character, good food and real ales plus many foreign bottled beers; self-catering cottages and apartments
Rustic benches and tables on the heated terrace here take in the stunning views down over the Winster Valley to the woods below Whitbarrow Scar; it really is an idyllic spot. The pub itself is a favourite with many of our readers and the main bar has plenty of character, with low black beams in the bowed ceiling, and country chairs and plain wooden tables on polished flagstones. A small lounge has oak tables and settles to match its fine Jacobean panelling, there's a plain little room beyond the serving counter with pictures and a fire in an open range, a family room with an old-parlourish atmosphere and an upstairs dining room; piped music, board games and TV. Cumbrian Dickie Doodle, Hawkshead Bitter and Windermere Pale, Thwaites Wainwright and Winster Valley Old School on handpump, quite a few foreign bottled beers, 13 wines by the glass and a dozen malt whiskies; service is friendly and prompt. The stylish and comfortable self-catering cottages and apartments also have fine views.

Good Pub Guide Food

As well as offering light breakfasts and afternoon snacks, the choice of excellent food might include interesting lunchtime sandwiches, wraps, melts and toasted ciabattas, sticky ribs, black pudding stack with home-made brown sauce, a trio of sausages (wild boar and apple, venison and cranberry, duck and chilli) with red wine and roast onion gravy, steak burger topped with cheese and cajun-spiced onion rings with thin fries and chilli jam, vegetarian shepherd's pie and specials like chicken breast wrapped in smoked bacon on asparagus and spinach with a creamy white wine sauce, and cheese-topped fish pie.

Bar food times: 12 - 2.30, 6 - 9 (some afternoon snacks, too) ; all day weekends; light breakfasts 10am - midday

Great food, great location... get here early!!!

I fear that this pub, once my favourite in the area,is now becoming a restaurant that serves drinks..much like the Drunken Duck.
But I suppose this is the only way to survive these days.

Pretty much everything you'd want from a country pub + a really good view + good food. 'Nuff said.

Fantastic view, great beer garden, amazing selection of beers - both on tap and bottles. The outside garden is as nice a place to be on a sunny afternoon. Highly recomended!
