Maltsters Arms, Rotherfield Greys, Oxfordshire, RG9 4QD – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Well run, civilised Chilterns country pub, nice scenery and walks
Friendly helpful staff make you feel quickly at home here, and they have a winter open fire, decent coffee and a dozen wines by the glass as well as well kept Brakspears Bitter and Old and a guest such as Jennings Cumberland on handpump. The maroon-carpeted front room has comfortable wall banquettes and lots of horsebrasses on its black beams; there may be soft piped music. Beyond the serving area, which has hop bines and pewter tankards hanging from its joists, a back room has cricketing prints on dark red walls over a shiny panelled dado, and a mix of furnishings from pink-cushioned pale wooden dining chairs to a pair of leatherette banquettes forming a corner booth. The chocolate labradors have been here as long as the licensees - 13 years. Terrace tables under a big heated canopy are set with linen for meals, and the grass behind has picnic-sets under green parasols, looking out over paddocks to rolling woodland beyond. Greys Court (NT) is not far and two good walks pass close by.

Good Pub Guide Food

A wide choice of reasonably priced home-made food runs from from paninis through chicken liver mousse, a daily pie, spinach gnocchi on tomato passata, baked smoked haddock florentine with bechamel sauce, crispy belly of pork chinese style and slow-roasted half shoulder of lamb with mint gravy; it's best to book for weekends.

Bar food times: 12 - 2.15 (2.30 Sun) , 6.15 - 9.15; not Sun evening

We had dinner here last night. I had a starter of Arbroath smokie fishcake with spinach and Japanese Panko and breadcrumbs with salad. It also came with a sticky tomato chilli jam 6.25. Very nice fish cakes and the
chilli jam was very good.

I then had the special of mussels ( available in three different sauces) with a spiced thai sauce. These came with either bread or chips. 11.95. Very nice mussels- lots of them and very fragrant sauce.

My wife had the lamb slow roasted 1/2 shoulder with a red wine jus. 12.95.

Large portion of lamb very nice not too fatty.

We then had a rather dissapointing desert pear tarte tatin.

coffee came with two pieces of home made fudge - very nice. Excellent service as usual.

They also do a mars bar fondue which sounds fun at 4.95 p/p

Quiz nights Sundays, Steak and kidney pudding night

Tuesdays, Fish Wednesday.

Four of us had Sunday lunch at the pub and we have a delicious meal. Two had roast beef and the other stuffed chicken breast wrapped in palma halm. Only two had deserts both being treacle tart and custard. Beef was£9.75 and chicken £10.50. All meals were really enjoyed with a good pint of breaksbere and three glasses of different good housewines. This is a lovelly old pub in a beautiful location with lovely walks down through what is known as 'Happy Valley' with Red Kites(birds of prey) flying around

Quite the best pub around! A superb host - a landlord who really knows how to make his guests welcome - and excellent food. The Mars Bar Fondue is to die for ...!

Yesterday two friends and I revisited this superb pub and were not disappointed. The beer, Wychwood's Hobgoblin, was very good and the food was excellent. We had the steak and kidney suet pudding, the fish & chips and the Toulouse sausages. The service was both very efficient and friendly. This pub thoroughly deserves to be in future pulications and in our opinion should be in the main section for Oxfordshire.

Regards, Ross Balaam.

We did a circular walk around this pub on Saturday. We had a panini ( no baguettes anymore ) and chips. The panini was not filled with much ham or tomato and the chips were large and few of them. Considering the price we paid we think this was poor value. We did email the owner who said they had changed the menu and apologised for the lack of filling. It is a shame because we would make the effort to drive out there for dinner but I don't think we will now based upon our experiences.
