Lord Poulett Arms, Hinton St George, Somerset, TA17 8SE – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Thatched 17th-c stone inn with charming antique-filled rooms, well presented food, good choice of drinks and a pretty garden; bedrooms
Although most people come to this civilised old inn to enjoy the excellent food or to stay in the pretty cottagey bedrooms, there's a good mix of both diners and drinkers and they do keep Branscombe Branoc, Otter Ale and a guest such as Moor Revival on handpump. Several attractive cosy linked areas have rugs on bare boards or flagstones, open fires (one in an inglenook and one in a raised fireplace that separates two rooms), walls of honey-coloured stone or painted in bold Farrow & Ball colours, hop-draped beams, antique brass candelabra, fresh flowers and candles, and some lovely old farmhouse, windsor and ladderback chairs around fine oak or elm tables. Fourteen wines by the glass, jugs of Pimms and home-made cordial; the pub cat is called Honey. Outside, under a wisteria-clad pergola, there are white metalwork tables and chairs in a mediterranean-style lavender-edged gravelled area and picnic-sets in a wild flower meadow; boules. This is a charming and peaceful village and there are walks nearby.

Good Pub Guide Food

Using home-grown vegetables and other local organic produce, the first-rate food includes lunchtime filled baguettes, mackerel and poached rhubarb tart, burger with triple cooked chips and caramelised onion jam, beer-battered fish with gribiche sauce, slow-roasted pork shoulder with apple sauce and crackling, pigeon breast with parsnip purée and a fish dish of the day.

I always use this pub on my way to & from London & have never had a bad meal.
The food is not cheap, but if you like your grub, its worth every penny.
I think the owner may have been an antique dealer as the furniture is the best I've seen in a pub, you certainly wouldn't mistake this place for a chain pub.
The garden is pretty & the village is very twee, prefect for a pre-dinner stroll.

I live on the Dorset coast, so this pub is a 1/2hr drive, but well worth it. It concentrates on food, which is always consistently top notch & although we eat here probably 10 times a year, we still look forward to each visit to see what is going to be on the menu.
If you are an antiques buff as my husband is you'll love the furniture, some of which is apparantly rather good, I'm happiest in the garden which I think has won an award from Gardeners World, don't miss the wilder part out the back.
The owners & helpers are lovely & as we've been visiting so long they feel like friends & have never been anything other than charming.
I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. The rooms were very good and so was the food but the attitude of the staff was very odd and unwelcoming. A very strange atmosphere - we felt as if we were just a big nuisance and we were glad to leave.

Stayed the weekend here recently & had a fantastic time. The village the pub is located in really helps, it is gorgeous.
The staff were great fun & really looked after us & the food was to die for.
Great place to re-charge your batteries, I can see why they have won all the accolades, we'll be back.

Excellent food but totally let down by poor service and odd attitude of the staff. Almost as if they didn't want to be there and had just had an arguement with management etc. Very dissapointing given how amazing the food was.
