Lifeboat, Thornham, Norfolk, PE36 6LT – The Good Pub Guide

Lucky Dip

In administration as we went to press, but hopefully all will settle; characterful inn facing coastal sea flats, several interesting bars, pews, window seats, carved oak tables, masses of guns, swords, reed-slashers and other antique farm tools, lighting by antique paraffin lamps, pubby food, Adnams, Greene King and Woodfordes ales; children welcome, dogs in bar, back terrace with play area, lots of surrounding walks, bedrooms, has been open all day

Have been an regular customer here for 10 years (have a caravan nearby) The food used to be very good. The last twice, once being Easter Monday was unacceptable but edible. This Saturday night, I took some girl friends just because it's so convenient plus I wanted to give the food a chance. It was hideous. My olive starter consisted of very cold tinned, wrinkled olives, a miniscule slither of sundried tomato and a drip (no lie!) of balsamic vinegar in the olive oil. My fishcakes were over cooked and the mediteranean salad was a laugh-lettuce, 1/4 tomato and yes, the tinned olive (singular). I'm not going to waste my typing on what my friends had. Needless to say I am gutted. One of the most gorgeous settings for a pub, very friendly staff, and so handy for us. I'm just glad there is another pub in the village.

Can't make my mind up about this place. Beautiful setting for sure. Used to be reliable in terms of food and service levels, but since bought by a 'group' seems to have gone backwards a bit. Returned for a Sunday lunch, two years after two 'bad' experiences on separate visits and was left with same feeling. Food decent quality. Service a little disorganised, with mistakes, confusion and a long gap between courses. Service headed by delightful, young, lady who appeared to be acting as supervisor, but was clearly exhausted. Maybe best visited outside main tourist season. Interested in views of others ...
