Old-fashioned gaslit pub in interesting location with dark-panelled original bar, up to seven real ales, and standard bar food; seats outside

Unchanging and enjoyable, this is a traditional, old-fashioned pub still with gas lighting, which adds a lot to the atmosphere. The original bar has a fire burning in the old black range (with a long row of smoothing irons on the mantelpiece), plain elm stools and oak settles built into the walls, and dark panelling. A more comfortable extension has carefully preserved the original style, down to good wood-pegged oak panelling (two embossed with royal arms), and a high shelf of plates; there are also two other small flagstoned rooms and the conservatory opens on to the garden. Clarks Classic Blonde, Tetleys, Timothy Taylors Landlord and guest beers such as Black Sheep Riggwelter, Wadworths 6X and Wychwood Hobgoblin on handpump. Sunny benches outside face the village green which is surrounded by 19th-c stone merchants' houses; there are picnic-sets on a side lawn and a nice walled garden.

Straightforward bar food includes sandwiches, soup, yorkshire pudding and onion gravy, steak in ale pie, beer battered haddock, daily specials, and puddings like lemon cheesecake and chocolate fudge cake.
