Civilised and stylish with excellent food and drinks, a proper bar plus several lounge areas and dining rooms, and a lovely garden; elaborately decorated bedrooms

This is a smart 17th-c coaching inn in a lovely village of Georgian houses and although many customers are here to enjoy the thriving, professionally run restaurant and hotel side, there is a proper front bar with a cheerful mix of chatty drinkers. This room is panelled, with a log fire, a series of watercolours showing scenes from local walks and Greene King Abbot and Woodfordes Nelsons Revenge and Wherry on handpump. The extensive and carefully chosen wine list has helpful notes and around 18 (including champagne and sparkling wine) by the glass; lots of whiskies and liqueurs. There's a conservatory with leather armchairs and sofas, a lounge for afternoon tea and several restaurants (for which it's best to book to be sure of a table). The lovely walled garden has plenty of seats and a big awning covers the moroccan-style dining area.

As well as lunchtime sandwiches, the first-class food includes truffled chicken liver parfait with date and apple chutney, vanilla, vodka, dill and goji berry cured salmon with celeriac remouade, wild mushroom, rocket and mascarpone risotto with a poached egg, cajun chicken with sweetcorn fritters and a tomato and avocado salsa, beer-battered cod, steak burger with bacon and cheese, and herb-crusted rack of lamb with roasted root vegetables.
