Holly Bush, Potters Crouch, Hertfordshire, AL2 3NN – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Well tended cottage with gleaming furniture, fresh flowers and china, well kept Fullers beers, good value food, and an attractive garden
New licensees at this beautifully kept pub have freshened it up with a lick of paint and brought the enormous wisteria that threatened to swamp it under control. The interior is cleverly partitioned and has something of the feel of a smart country house. There are quite a few antique dressers (several filled with plates), a number of comfortably cushioned settles, a fox's mask, some antlers, a fine old clock with a lovely chime, daily papers, and on the right as you go in, a big fireplace. In the evening, neatly placed candles cast glimmering light over darkly varnished tables, all sporting fresh flowers. The long, stepped bar has particularly well kept Fullers Chiswick, ESB, London Pride and a Fullers seasonal beer on handpump. Service is calm, friendly and sincere, even when they're busy. Behind the pub, the very pleasant fenced-off garden has a nice lawn, handsome trees and sturdy picnic-sets. Though the pub seems to stand alone on a quiet little road, it's only a few minutes' drive from the centre of St Albans (or a pleasant 45-minute walk). Children are welcome in the garden.

Good Pub Guide Food

As well as a good choice of sandwiches and burgers, the very fairly priced, seasonally changing menu might include a fish platter, half a pint of prawns, cornish pasty, salmon, cumberland sausage and spring onion mash, sweet potato and coriander fishcakes, warm duck salad, and lamb cutlets with onion confit.

Bar food times: 12 - 2 (2.30 Sun) , 6 - 9; not Sun - Tues evenings

Loverly little pub, great food, good choice of beers, fantastic that it has a only adult bar, so many pubs in St Albans have so many kids running around, it's nice to relax away from kids

A really lovely pub. Great food and my boyfriend thinks this is the best beer for miles around. The pub itself is beautifully kept, as is the large garden. Excellent friendly staff make for a very pleasant evening. Would highly recommend!

Visited the Holly Bush last week on the way down to the coast. Just off the m1 so really handy.
First impressions are that everything is so clean and shiny and the garden at the back is huge! The description in the guide is spot on.
My husband said the beer was great and the lunch time food we had was as good too.
Not with the 3 children as we had left them behind and I checked with a lovely young lady and they said that children are welcome in the garden which I think is fair enough. As much as I love my kids, it's nice to get away from them sometimes!
Will return when I travel through this way again in future.

This is a lovely pub, and I've been here many times, but alas, won't be able to go ever again because *they do not allow children*. Period. We tried to have lunch there yesterday with my absolutely perfectly behaved infant daughter (a veteran of pubs up and down the country), and they shooed us out the door without so much as an apology. Such a shame. Please make a note of this in upcoming editions of the guide, especially as it's very close to top family attractions (St. Alban's, Butterfly World, etc.).

A warm and welcoming traditional country pub. Have been here many times. Great environment and fantastic homecooked food.
