Good Pub Guide Recommended
There's always a really good mix of customers in this snug old stone cottage all of whom are made to feel genuinely welcomed by the hard-working licensees and their staff. The comfortable beamed bar has plenty of atmosphere, lots of racing memorabilia including racing silks, tunics, photographs, race badges, framed newspaper cuttings and horseshoes (their local horse won the Gold Cup in 2010 and they have dedicated an area in the bar to him); there' s a winter log fire in an unusual pillar-supported stone fireplace. The public bar has flagstones and stripped-stone masonry, and racing on TV; newspapers to read, darts, board games and piped music. Festival Gold, Donnington SBA and a beer named for the pub on handpump, several wines (including champagne) by the glass and 16 malt whiskies. From the pleasant garden behind the pub there are views towards the sloping fields; decent nearby walks.
Good Pub Guide Food
As well as daily specials such as smoked mackerel pâté with a horseradish cream, spaghetti with wild mushroom sauce and local venison in a red wine and shallot sauce, the tasty food might include filled baguettes, home-made burger, sausages with creamy mash and gravy, ham and free-range eggs, and a pie of the day.
