Good Pub Guide Recommended
This carefully run dining pub is part of the swiss-styled Shuttleworth Estate, and the glorious sloping garden (with tables on a terrace) which stretches up to pine woods behind the pub dates back to the same period and was designed in the same style. Inside, four beautifully kept beamed rooms, with dark standing timbers, work their way around the central servery. Cleverly blending contemporary styling with the attractive old structure, décor is in cosy reds and creams, with upholstered armchairs and sofas and coffee tables on stripped flooring, light wood tables, a woodburning stove in an inglenook fireplace and fresh flowers on the bar. Prints and photographs depict historic aircraft in the famous Shuttleworth Collection just up the road. Wells & Youngs Eagle IPA and Youngs Bitter are on handpump, with a dozen or so wines by the glass including some from a local vineyard; piped music. Though there's an ample car park, you may need to use the village hall parking as an overflow. There are some substantial walks nearby.
Good Pub Guide Food
Food here is thoughtfully prepared and presented. Breads and ice-cream are home-made and they make an effort to use local and organic ingredients. The changing menus might include chicken liver parfait, tempura king prawns and squid with soy, lime and chilli dressing, chickpea, tomato and potato curry, roast bass with grilled courgettes, aubergine, red pepper and fennel, ploughman's, pie of the day, rump burger, thai green curry, and well hung steak.
