Good Pub Guide Recommended
At its most pubby at lunchtime, this is an attractive stone-built dining pub that's handy for the M62. The main bar has beams and flagstones, bentwood chairs, leather stools around stripped-pine tables and a roaring log fire. Comfortable carpeted dining areas with bold paintwork and leather dining chairs around polished tables lead off; the hunting-theme wallpaper is interesting and unusual. Jennings Cumberland, Cocker Hoop, Sneck Lifter and a changing guest on handpump, 14 wines by the glass and two champagnes; piped music. There are picnic-sets outside, and fine views through the latticed pub windows across the Calder Valley to the distant outskirts of Huddersfield the lights are pretty at night.
Good Pub Guide Food
Using local, seasonal produce, the good, modern food at lunchtime includes sandwiches, hot smoked salmon and dill risotto topped with a poached egg, beer-battered haddock and spicy lamb with coriander and coconut milk, with more pricey evening dishes like duck liver and foie gras parfait with apricot chutney, pork fillet wrapped in smoked pancetta, blue cheese croquettes, fennel and apple salad and cider cream sauce, and goan fish curry with king prawns and cashew nuts; they also offer a good value two- and three-course set menu (Monday-Friday lunchtimes and from 6-7pm).
