George, Alfriston, Sussex, BN26 5SY – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Venerable inn in lovely village with comfortable, heavily beamed bars, good wines and several real ales; fine nearby walks; bedrooms
Much enjoyed by our readers, this is an ancient and very well run village inn. The busy long bar has massive hop-hung low beams, appropriately soft lighting and a log fire (or summer flower arrangement) in a huge stone inglenook fireplace that dominates the room, with lots of copper and brass around it. There are settles and chairs around sturdy stripped tables, Greene King IPA and Abbot, Hardys & Hansons Old Trip and a guest like Goddards Fuggle-Dee-Dum on handpump, decent wines including champagne by the glass, board games and piped music; good service. The lounge has comfortable sofas, standing timbers and rugs on the wooden floor and the restaurant is cosy and candlelit. There are seats in the spacious flint-walled garden and two long-distance paths, the South Downs Way and Vanguard Way, cross here; Cuckmere Haven is close by. The beamed bedrooms are comfortable; they don't have a car park but there is parking a couple of minutes away.

Good Pub Guide Food

Good, interesting food includes lunchtime sandwiches, rustic sharing boards, grilled field mushrooms with manchego and chorizo, smoked salmon and mackerel terrine, sausage and mash with onion gravy, a changing risotto, game casserole, and corn-fed chicken with a roasted tomato and olive sauce.

Bar food times: all day
