First the good news - the beer was excellent. Good choice of ales, I had Theakstons Black Bull. However, I wouldn't recommend this pub for food. Admittedly we booked for Sunday lunch (at 3pm) but I have also eaten here on a week night and been underwhelmed. When booking we were not asked if we wanted to sit anywhere in particular, and when we arrived were parked in a dark corner rather than out on the balcony overlooking the locks as it was "busy" - if we'd been asked where we wanted to sit when booking maybe we'd have got out there.
I ordered roast of the day (chicken) and my wife roast beef. Both arrived within five minutes and I'd be amazed if any was cooked fresh. The portion of chicken was smaller than served in a KFC (and you get 3 to a portion there), and rested on a hunk of "stuffing" the size of a doughnut, though stodgier. It was accompanied by 3 undercooked roast potatoes and a lake of gravy, plus the standard tray of 3 vegetables (red cabbage, carrots and stringy mangetout). The slice of beef was pronounced dry, and the yorkshire pudding was also dry and flavourless.
We didn't stay for pudding and were out within 40 minutes. Overall the experience was akin to a Little Chef.
By all means call in for a beer, but you might find the cafe next door a better bet for food.
