Good Pub Guide Recommended
Pretty white cottage rejuvenated with a stylishly airy décor and an enterprising menu
Since reopening in 2008, this pub has shed its cluttered appearance and in its place it has become much lighter and airier. The licensee is well known to us from his days at the helm of the Grosvenor Arms in Aldford - a longstanding and several times award winning main entry. The original bar is dominated by a big log fireplace and a bigger uncluttered dining area has attractive rugs and an eclectic mix of period tables on polished oak floorboards, with extensive panelling on the walls, which are hung with a couple of hundred framed old prints. Outside is plentiful seating on a terrace and in the garden, which contains old fruit trees and a tractor. Real ales include Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Thwaites and a couple of guests such as Brains Bread of Heaven or Exmoor Hound Dog; good array of wines, with 24 by the glass.Good Pub Guide Food
The changing menu has imaginative snacks and sandwiches, and might include starters such as cider soused mackerel, oysters, or goats cheese soufflé, with main courses ranging from pubby standards like steak and ale pie, beer battered haddock, steakburger, and ploughman's to more imaginative dishes like roasted cod loin with curried mussels and dishes served with their Café de Paris butter' - the menu lists its 22 flavourings.
