Fountain, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2UU – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Friendly and attractive small pub in town centre, with plenty of room and a bustling atmosphere
Built in the 18th c to house builders working on the nearby cathedral, this attractive little pub, with blue shutters and pretty window boxes, is busy and friendly. There are lots of customers popping in and out but plenty of room in the big comfortable bar which has a large open fire, some interesting bric-a-brac, Butcombe Bitter and Sharps Doom Bar on handpump and several wines by the glass; unobtrusive piped music and board games. There's an upstairs restaurant, too.

Good Pub Guide Food

Traditional bar food at lunchtime includes sandwiches, pork, apple and sage terrine with apple chutney, a quiche of the day and sausages with onion gravy, with evening choices like lamb shank in cranberry, wine and garlic, and pork tenderloin with a creamy sherry and stilton sauce.

We had a couple of meals here last week. We have a rule that says don't go back to a pub the same week after having a good meal as you might well be disappointed. We really think on the basis of two excellent meals that this place deserves a food award. The first meal:

Oriental duck salad with noodles. This was a big portion with a fantastic sauce. I then had the mackerel fillets ( three) with a good butter sauce. My wife had a breaded pork which was also good let down by the sauce perhaps. We then had the cheeseboard which was a good size with some very nice cheeses. It also came with celery, grapes, bread and biscuits.

The second meal I had another excellent salad a salad niscoise ( tuna salad). The fish was excellent NOT out of a tin! I then had 'tart of the day' ( a quiche) which was very nice and my wife had the fish and chips. Excellent fish again. We had a bottle of a Chilean Merlot the 2nd night which was good value. Service on both nights was very good and we really liked the atmosphere with locals and tourists.
