Good Pub Guide Recommended

Good views from friendly remote-feeling pub with hundreds of whiskies, all for sale by the bottle in new shop; trout and some meats on menu come from their own land

Feeling much more remote than it really is - mainly because of the final single-track drive - this stone-built pub has fine views of the surrounding farmland and trout lakes, from which the family that run it get the fish, beef, and venison used in their food. But what really makes it stand out is the incredible range of malt whiskies, currently numbering around 500. Almost half are ranked on shelves above the bar counter, each new one added as the collection grew, but all are available in the new whisky shop in a corner of the main room; this also sells wines, and half the fun is looking at the price stickers on some of the rarer or vintage bottles. They do occasional tutored whisky tastings. The bar has something of the feel of a mountain lodge, with its bare stone walls and beamed ceilings, though the wallpaper around the fireplace adds a more civilised touch. A similar dining room opens off. Five well kept beers such as Black Sheep, Timothy Taylors Landlord and changing beers from Moorhouse, Phoenix and Skipton, and a good wine list, with the emphasis on new world ones; particularly friendly staff. There are a few picnic-sets outside. Over the next year they plan a few changes, adding a new dining room so the main room can become a lounge for drinkers. You can arrange coarse fishing on the lakes.

Good Pub Guide Food

Home-made food includes soup, field mushrooms filled with sautéed sweet balsamic leeks, crushed hazelnuts and blacksticks blue cheese, black pudding and queen scallops in a smoked bacon and lancashire cheese sauce, fish pie, steak pudding, chicken breast stuffed with black pudding and brie, burgers, fresh fish, and daily specials like roast pork belly on celery mash with sweet red onion and celery jus. They don't take bookings (though with notice can arrange suckling pig for groups).
